Autumn Soundwalk at Lake Ginninderra

2018-03-13

On a beautiful autumn day, I felt the crisp air and vibrant colours stirring a mix of emotions within me. The invigorating atmosphere of autumn coexisted with bittersweet, nostalgic, and contemplative feelings. Seeking solace and a chance to reflect on these emotions, I decided to embark on a soundwalk around Lake Ginninderra.

Embarking on a soundwalk is a deeply immersive and personal journey into the world of sound that surrounds us. As an electroacoustic musician, I find that these mindful listening experiences not only connect me with the unique sonic tapestry of different environments but also spark my creativity in unexpected ways. Through soundwalks, we can attune ourselves to the intricate dance of natural and human-made sounds, inspiring compositions that resonate with the emotions and stories embedded within our surroundings. This practice fosters a profound connection with the spaces we inhabit and enriches our awareness of the sonic landscape in the realms of acoustic ecology, music, and sound art.

Canberra can be quite windy in autumn, so I prepared my equipment accordingly. I used my Android phone with a recording app to capture the rich sonic tapestry of the environment, along with a Rode NTG1 shotgun microphone, equipped with a windshield and shock mount for optimal sound quality in the breezy conditions. With my equipment in tow, I set off on a meandering route around the lake, allowing the contours of the landscape to guide my footsteps and reveal the hidden symphony of sounds. My intention for this soundwalk was not only to immerse myself in the ever-changing sonic environment but also to contemplate life, nature, and the profound emotions that autumn evokes.

Nestled within the Belconnen district of Canberra, Lake Ginninderra is a captivating artificial lake that offers an inviting sanctuary for reflection and rejuvenation. The lake was constructed in 1974 to collect stormwater discharge from an approximately one hundred square kilometre catchment. The lake is home to much wildlife, such as the Black swan, moorhens, ducks and the Rakali, and offers a picturesque recreational space for the local community. As I wandered the lake’s parklands, walking and cycling paths, playgrounds, and picnic areas, I found myself drawn to the serene beauty and diversity of its flora and fauna. This tranquil oasis in the heart of Canberra provided an ideal setting for my soundwalk, allowing me to explore the harmonious interplay of natural and human-made sounds while connecting with my inner world and the emotions that autumn evokes.

During my soundwalk around Lake Ginninderra, I explored various locations in the afternoon and returned in the evening. This allowed me to experience the distinct sonic features that emerged as the day progressed. In the afternoon, the playful sounds of children mingling with animals filled the air, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere. As I returned in the evening, the soundscape transitioned to the soothing calls of birds and the gentle rustling of black swans as they glided across the water. I recorded the unique sounds I encountered during each phase of the day, capturing the dynamic interplay of sounds that formed the aural tapestry of Lake Ginninderra.
